Minoo Moghadam
In the colorful world of painting, I create artworks that are close to my roots, in that I have been greatly influenced by my culture and background. I love to paint the subjects based on my emotions and feelings of the different events in my life. I was seeking freedom as an Iranian woman who experienced many human-caused events like revolution, war, and immigration. So in my recent abstract works, I combined Persian calligraphy and abstract painting to break the old cultural and traditional rules and create a unique modern vision for the audience to feel and enjoy the balance of colors and forms. I express the reality of life as an Iranian woman with a sense of balance and harmony that paradoxically represents the unstable cultural and political life of many women around the world. This is the merging of tradition and modernity to create artworks based on my individual experience and emotions.
I have been influenced by Artemisia Gentileschi and Frida Kahlo. They are both well known female artists who used their personal experiences and struggles to create powerful and emotional pieces. As an abstract painter, Jackson Pollock’s technique of dripping and splatter paint captured more emotions from the unconscious mind and expressed more feelings to me. After a decade of creating abstract paintings, I got inspired by Persian calligraphy, especially the Toranj style that was designed by Younes Faghihi, a multidisciplinary artist who I got a great influence from and I incorporate elements of color, shape, texture, and alphabet forms to reflect the current culture, social, and political landscape of recent time in my artworks.
I started my own style by using acrylic and alcohol ink in thin layers of paint and various techniques to generate a harmonious relationship between forms of alphabet and colors. As a female artist my artwork presents women and their equal rights in society and tries to make sure a woman's voice does not remain a whisper with regard to complete freedom. The combination of abstract painting and Persian calligraphy creates a unique visual language that blends elements of Eastern and Western art. This fusion results in dynamic, gestural compositions that incorporate fluid lines, bold brushstrokes, and intricate calligraphic forms. This unique style evokes a sense of movement, energy, and spirituality, while also exploring themes of cultural identity and artistic heritage.
